South Myrtle Beach vs. North Myrtle Beach
There are some important differences when you compare South Myrtle Beach hotels and attractions versus those in North Myrtle Beach to when trying to the best home base for your Grand Strand vacation. Though there is no boardwalk in North Myrtle Beach or on the southern end of the city—the famous Boardwalk is located between the two—these areas are still home to some of the best entertainment, places to shop, and restaurants. Distancing yourself from the promenade downtown and staying a few miles away affords a peaceful retreat from the crowds and noise, without sacrificing things to do during your Grand Strand vacation.
Though the distance from North Myrtle Beach to South Myrtle Beach is only about 15 miles, the differences go beyond geography; each area’s hotels, attractions, and atmospheres are distinct. North Myrtle Beach hotels offer more upscale accommodations and private-feeling beaches than the waterpark resorts on the south end. Barefoot Landing is an upbeat, dog-friendly district to the north with kitschy, one-of-a-kind shops. Its attractions include Alligator Adventure and a modest collection of kiddie rides. South Myrtle Beach offers a completely different scene; here you’ll find the sprawling Family Kingdom Amusement Park, plus commercial stores at The Market Common and Coastal Grand Mall.
If you want to still feel the pulse of the city, a resort in South Myrtle Beach is a better fit versus a mellow, secluded North Myrtle Beach hotel. The southern end of Myrtle Beach is best for active vacationers because the large hotels with waterparks and nearby retail stores and chain restaurants are lively hangouts, but for more relaxation, head north to enjoy local shops and restaurants, plus hotels with low-key but fun amenities and laid-back beaches. While statistics suggest North Myrtle Beach is safer than South Myrtle, both are popular Grand Strand destinations where families feel comfortable visiting beaches and attractions on and off the resorts.
