Myrtle Beach Attraction Spotlight: Duplin Winery
If you’ve driven through North Myrtle Beach in recent years, you’ve most likely noticed a new attraction at Barefoot Landing: Duplin Winery. The welcoming attraction is located adjacent to Alligator Adventure and is a great place for wine tastings as well as purchasing wine & gifts. But did you know that Duplin Winery is not based out of Myrtle Beach?
Duplin Winery is a family-owned business based out of Rose Hill, North Carolina that spans back to the 1970s. Back then, Muscadine grapes were in-demand, and a large winery from New York was paying big bucks to acquire grapes from D.J. Fussell, Sr. and his two sons, David and Dan. After a few years, the price of the Fussell’s grapes fell drastically and they needed to find a way to survive in the industry, so they decided to make wine.
The Fussells gathered up all of their relatives – grandchildren, aunts, uncles, and more – to help stomp the Muscadine grapes as well as bottle the wine. They sold their deliciously sweet wine in a converted hog trailer until, eventually, they reached rapid growth in the early 80s. However, due to tax laws and the economy, the rest of the 80s were tough for Duplin Winery. While quitting was always an option, the family put their best foot forward and pushed for success – something they would come to celebrate in the near future.
In the early 2000s, a third generation of the family took charge of the winery. Jonathan and David Fussell became heavily involved in the day-to-day operations at the winery and led tours as well as wine tastings in their Rose Hill location until they decided it was time to fulfill one of their long-time dreams of opening a second location along the Grand Strand.
The Barefoot Landing location of Duplin Winery opened in 2015 and has been thriving ever since. Guests here can witness a hand-bottling line that echoes the past of the company, as well as stop by for wine tastings, hang outs in the courtyard, gift shopping, and tons of fun.
When you stop by the North Myrtle Beach location of Duplin Winery, be sure to try out their award-winning Magnolia, Hatteras Red, and Scuppernong wines.
